The University of
the Arts College of Art and Design is offering "Paper, Print and
Book" an independent study abroad course in Fabriano, Italy in
the summer of 2007, through the MFA Book Arts /Printmaking Program and
the Undergraduate Printmaking / Book Arts Program. Students may take
this 1.5 credit course for graduate or undergraduate credit. The course
is open to all graduate students and junior level undergraduate students
in good academic standing.
Course Description
The course will offer students two weeks of intensive study at the Museum
of Paper and Watermark, Fabriano, Italy. Traditional Italian book arts
topics covered will be papermaking, watermark-making, burin engraving,
binding, marbling and calligraphy. Instruction will be given by Italian
masters in these techniques, with language interpretation provided by
instructor Lynn Sures. Field trips will include such medieval cities
as Assisi and Gubbio, as well as natural landmarks. This is an opportunity
to immerse yourself in the arts and culture of Italy, in a charming,
historic city renowned for both-and off the beaten tourist path.
Paper, Print and Book in Fabriano
Fabriano, Italy is relatively untouched by tourism, and is an ideal
location for a cultural experience for American university students.
Everything in the city is accessible on foot, with many attractive destinations
nearby. The city is warm and welcoming to American visitors. The course
of instruction will be comprised of several 2-and 3-day units covering
many aspects of Italian book arts. Papermaking in the tradition of the
Italians, including line and chiaroscuro watermarks, will be offered
with master papermaker Luigi Mecella in the papermill at the
Fabriano Museum of Paper and Watermark. Included will be a lecture by
Annarita Librari, a young master of the chiaroscuro watermark.
Instruction in bookbinding with a master binder will take place in the
museum's bindery, as will instruction in Italian paper marbling and
calligraphy. An intensive introduction to traditional engraving will
be offered with noted engraver Roberto Stelluti. The course will
also include a lecture on the history of Italian papermaking by Franco
Mariani, the director of the Institute of Graphic Arts in Urbino
and noted scholar of Italian papermaking history. Supplementary trips
to Assisi to see the Basilica of Saint Francis, to a working bindery
in Gubbio, and an excursion to the Grottoes of Frassasi, the Conero
national park and Adriatic seashore-all near Fabriano-will complete
the student's immersion in the cultural heritage of this historic region
of Italy.
Course
requirements
Students will learn the Fabriano pulp beating processes, and have intensive
instruction in Italian-style sheet-forming for wire-watermarked and
chiaroscuro-watermarked paper. Students will have the opportunity to
work on their own watermark designs. Students will have instruction
in Italian binding styles and may use papers that they have made to
create their books. Students will learn traditional engraving techniques
and intaglio printing with a noted master, and the papers made by students
can be used in printing. Students should expect a full immersion in
the paper, book and print techniques of this region of Italy. In addition,
the cultural experiences-art, music, cuisine, and natural-will provide
the student with a rich appreciation of Fabriano's people, history,
and distinctly Italian character.
